I guess my biggest issue, like many others here, is the complete lack of consistency. I shipped two presents Priority Mail early Tuesday morning. One was headed to Illinois and one to Virginia. The Virginia shipment was delivered yesterday, 3000 miles away. The Illinois shipment has traveled a total of 19 miles and still resides in the Oakland sort center. Unfortunately, my sister in Illinois is headed south for several weeks and will not get her present for Christmas:

Yup. Been going on all year at some level. Packages that get cross-country in 2 days and packages that can't get across town in a week. I've been bemused by it all year.

Mail is so unpredictable lately. I have packages outstanding for 10 days now.
But, two important sales I have sent off overnight, arrived as intended in just one day. NJ-SC.
    Best $28 I ever spent.

And then, completely unrelated to the actual post office, I pay Heritage immediately after winning one lot in the Partrick Auction, and THEY sit on it for almost two weeks before shipment.
I won't see this coin for a month

  • Here's an update on the eBay win I posted in another thread. 19 days to go from one facility in Philadelphia to another. It has been in USPS possession for 24 days now. Keep in mind, I was getting the 'in transit' message prior to it being scanned at the distribution center, which means it wasn't for almost all of that time and probably isn't now.

  • A tale of two packages.....

Shipped a coin in a padded mailer, first class with tracking scanned in Marietta GA at 10:59 PM December 15, delivered at mailbox in Kailua Kona HI at 12:58 PM December 19.

Shipped a Christmas present to my sister in upstate New York in a priority mail box scanned in Woodstock GA at 2:55 PM December 7, departed Atlanta-Peachtree GA distribution center 4:01 AM December 9 last update as of this morning still says in transit arriving late December 13. Today is the 20th folks, where is this package?

  • The Amazon clock is now ticking. Due Tuesday per the Amazon site via non-expedited Prime order.

  • I know not all of you are believers in the Locate Mail Request but I recently used it on a coin from the US Mint. It showed shipped on Dec 1 and I haven't seen an update since. Just showed in transit. Friday I filled out the form online and yesterday it finally shows movement. Not saying I'm a true believer yet but it seems like a big coincidence if that works for that many people. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • I hear that the Baltimore USPS hub is backed up by as much as three weeks. Maybe that's why my packages went straight to the Teterboro, NJ hub.

  • Here's some actual data from a WSJ article —

For parcels expected to arrive between Dec. 13 and Dec. 17, on-time scores were 92.1% at FedEx, 94.9% at UPS and 86.1% at the Postal Service, according to ShipMatrix, a software provider that analyzes shipping data. All scores have declined in the previous two weeks.

The "where is my package" option on the usps website no longer works. I have 2 packages that are MIA. One was sent on 12/12 the other 12/15, neither has yet to arrive at their respective destinations. When I tried to enter the tracking info into the form it would not complete....., thereby forcing you to click cancel to close the popup. I tried the "help for web issues" and that popup would not complete either.

Next time it's UPS or fedex, I'm done with the usps for packages. the cost isn't much different.

Interesting. What would be even more interesting would be knowing the average delay for those packages that are late, if that isn't factored into the scoring calculation already. I would speculate that USPS does far worse than the private carriers on that metric.

I think all of the 13.9% late postal services packages must be mine then....

I sent a Priority package on 12/2 from NJ to WI; that was the last known location update was later that PM in Newark, NJ. Then on 12/6 a non-location update "moving/on time" BS. Now 20 days later, it is promised delivery inside a two-hour window TODAY (very late BUT also very precise!) 🧐

  • BTW, here is what the USPS calls "resolved" when you attempt to locate a package. My Priority Mail shipment has traveled 19 miles in 8 days so I filed an inquiry yesterday:

Your USPS Service Request #196239xx Has Been Resolved!

    Dear Tim,

Thank you for contacting the United States Postal Service and taking the time to share your concerns with us.

This is in response to your recent inquiry concerning delayed delivery of your Priority Mail shipment.

The Postal Service is constantly changing, but its mission remains the same – to deliver the mail promptly, efficiently, and accurately, and to do so in a friendly manner.
We work very hard to offer good service to our customers, and it is genuinely disappointing to hear about instances when we simply do not meet your needs. The delivery service standard for Priority Mail is an estimate of 1 – 3 days. This is based on the origin and destination ZIP Codes of the mail piece, and the time the Postal Service receives it from the customer. This service is not guaranteed on a specific date.

In designing Priority Mail, one of our goals was to keep the cost as low as possible. Therefore, a refund factor for delays was not figured into the rate structure, as in the case of our Priority Mail Express service which provides a postage refund if we fail to deliver within a specific time frame. The service commitment is based on package drop-off times, and some exceptions apply. Additional information may be found online at www.usps.com.

Due to the COVID – 19 Virus, employee availability and unprecedented package volume, we have seen impacts to some delivery operations. The Postal Service is mindful of the fact that customers are in need of the timely delivery of mail, particularly mail conveying medications, merchandise packages, and First-Class Mail. Consequently we are currently undertaking efforts to bring on additional resources to address this situation.

We will continue to monitor daily performance and ensure that mail delivery is returned to normal as soon as possible, Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to resume normal delivery with limited staffing.

The Postal Service monitors feedback from customers like yourself, identifying patterns that permit us to improve our service. Despite your disappointment with this mailing, we hope you permit us another opportunity to serve you in the future.

While I realize that an apology is no substitute for good service, I hope you will accept our in the spirit in which it is offered. Every effort will be made to improve your level of service in the future. We will continue to monitor you item and update you as any information becomes available.

    Sincerely,

    Michael O McClure

I filled out 5 of them last week. 3 of the items started moving within 24 hours. One still hasn't moved. No update from Israel but im not even sure which postal authority has custody.

After posting what I term a "form letter" response to my Priority Mail package inquiry, I received this personal email from the destination Post Office Postmaster today. Color me impressed:

    Hi Tim.

Just wanted to update you on your package 94055036993001859881xx. It is Hazelwood MO today. We usually get these packages in a couple days. I will be off tomorrow so I won't be able to update you on any information before the 6th. Hopefully it shows up tomorrow

    Thanks,

    Michael O McClure.

  • Received yesterday (12/22), a month after filing a missing mail inquiry on a Priority package that arrived in my city on 11/19. Apparently the statement posted earlier in this thread that (internally) USPS knows the exact whereabouts of all packages at all times isn't entirely accurate. ;)

    Dear (my name),

    Thank you for using USPS.com.

  • not sure where the WSJ is getting their information of 92.1% of them being on time. 100% of my packages are late by a week to a month so far.

  • so i mailed 2 packages Monday morning -12/21, one first class package and the other was priority mail, both were going about the same distance, about 1,500 miles, the first class package got delivered about 3 hours ago, the priority package hasn't left the state yet

  • 8 days and counting on 3 of 5 priority packages mailed 12/15 from the NW.
Interestingly, 2 were delivered 12/17 to DE and VA.
The other 3 get the now popular *Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way*** to

  • I am going UPS from now on. I saw PCGS has a different address for UPS deliveries. An experiences using UPS to PCGS?

  • Another express usps delivery failure again today. And because the grading company did not get a scan when it was picked up there is no delivery guarantee today, so there is no incentive for the usps to deliver in a timely fashion.

Why? Nothing is going to change in January or in 2021 for that matter permanent damage has been done.

Yes, but why are they picking on him? ;)

  • How is the USPS Registered Mail going, is it behind as well?

  • No way that 92% are on time. I am waiting on regular USPS mailed checks from 10 clients that were sent more than 2 weeks ago. Absolutely ridiculous. Usually I would receive them in 2-4 days. It's more than just the packages...

92% was FedEx. 86% was USPS.

I think that number WAS accurate in early December, which is when the study was done. Things have descended into chaos lately. I ship about 50 packages per week. I've never had more than 5 or 6 delayed in a given week. At least not up until the last 2 weeks when things have gotten ridiculous.

  • The firm cited in the WSJ article is publishing the performance data on their site. Surprisingly, it notes that performance has actually improved from the figures shared in my prior post. I find that difficult to believe, as I'm sure others here might. Check it out for yourselves:

    https://shipmatrix.com/about-us/media-coverage/

  • I talked about that to my Postal Clerk yesterday. She said they are no longer paying out on late Express Mail shipments.

  • From the way my mail is moving both coming and going I think they have that number reversed....IE it's 8% not 92!

  • The coin I sent out on the 4th of December was finally delivered on December 23rd, 2020. No explanation and the tracking was horrible.

  • I mailed two first class packages on Monday. One was delivered on Wednesday, the other says scheduled for delivery on Saturday. I received two priority mail packages this week, tracking shows each took three days.

  • Picked up 3 items from my P.O. today. One was due Dec. 8th. It tracked to Baltimore on Dec. 6th and sat for 14 days. Other two were " only " a week late. My postmaster told me they're dealing with 20% more pkgs. than ever before. They expect it to be this way until mid January.

It's not going from my perspective. Here is the tracking on my Registered package - no movement since Dec. 10, the day I dropped it off:

On 3 different occasions in the past have had deliveries from my mailbox to delivered in Hawaii in 2 days. On Friday I sent a priority box to Douglas, WY, which was delivered yesterday. Surprised it got through Denver so fast.

  • This is the first Christmas I've used FedEx Ground/Home Delivery to ship presents. Three of the large boxes I shipped this past Friday arrived on Monday (closest destination was 1500 miles away). The total cost for these three large, heavy boxes was $65. I will never need to use the USPS again for Christmas packages.

Keeping it coin related, we spend less than $30 to ship monster boxes and they have always arrived within two days via FedEx Ground.

  • I think FedEx and UPS are doing fine. USPS is terrible right now

  • I finally received a coin today shipped Nov 30.

  • i would of contacted the seller by December 10th.

  • Did two deals on the BST and both to the same buyer (one day apart on deals) Shipped one large Priority and one Medium Priority from west coast to east coast. Shipped on 12/14 and 12/15 respectively. Both arrived today 12/24. So, 10 days on one and 9 on the other.
    Tis' the season!
